Valley of Flowers was discovered by Frank Smith in year 1931 When he was returning from expedition to Mount Kamet. Valley of Flowers is actually valley of river Pushpavati ( Stream of river Alaknanda), Valley of flowers is located at height of 3962 Mtrs ( 12995 Ft) Above sea level.
Valley of flowers has got fauna like dwarf iris, ferns,orchids,dwarf larkspur,dwarf rhododendrons,primula,blue poppies,fritillaria,asters,potentillas,inula grandifloras etc.
Flowers: As name suggests valley of flower is known for flowers thousands of flowers are found here from different families like orchids,poppies,primulas,calendulas,daisies,and anemones, carpet,etc.
Fauna: Valley of Flowers has got rich fauna , Wild animals like black bears, musk deers,brown bears,snow leaopards,tahr,bharal,serow, and many species of butterflies.
There is a 13 kms trek from Govindghat to Ghangharia, At Ghangaria one tourist bungalow is located , Camping is not allowed inside valley of flowers, on has to visit valley of flowers during day only, From Ghanghria 4 kms trek heads towards Valley of flowers, valley of flowers is approx 10 kms long and 2 kms wide, valley is surrounded by snow capped mountains and fresh water springs are available for water, One can visit valley of flowers from Mid April to last September but best time to visit valley is July to September when all flowers are blooming,
Thousands of flower bloom in this valley during monsoons including most famous flower Blue Poppy. Valley of flower is located 35 ksm from Joshimath , one has to stay at Ghangria at night and start early morning trek for Valley of flowers and return back to Ghangria ( night halt is now allowed at valley of flowers). Government of India has declared Valley of flowers as national park and grazing and settelments are banned in area. |
